Paypal for time

Posted in Technology Ventures at 1:24 pm by Ray Wu

I think voice is going to be the next killer app, which everyone seems to getting into this. But most of the large technology companies are mainly looking at the infrastructure side with VoIP, vs killer apps that is what will keep the value over time. Here is an interesting service called Ether, from Ingenio, used to be called Keen. I looked at its blog and found a nice description which I think explains it well

“Unlike directories like Keen.com, Ether is a entirely distributed model rather than centralized in a directory. It turns the model inside-out giving tools to sellers to sell their time wherever they have customer relationships and has built new functionality to serve these sellers.

Simply, Ether is like PayPal for time, while Live!Advice directories like Keen.com are more like Ebay.”

Now everyone has a tool to sell its expertise over the phone. Not a bad idea…

Use technology to give back more

Posted in Technology Ventures, Random thoughts at 12:17 am by Ray Wu

One of the areas my wife and I spend more time this year is to think about how to give back more. We decided to create a charitable foundation and start to discover the challenges of finding right charities to support. In addition to many decision criteria, one of the dimensions we look at is efficiency. Average charity spent 10 cents to raise $1 in contributions. A stats from Charity Navigator mentioned that average charity program spend 7% - 10% for fund-raising and 12% percent for administrative costs. So 20% cut right of the top on the money that is not used for the program, more on the SG&A (in corp term). I notice a few charities with efficiency of less than 60%.

The topics are about mobility and gaming, probably 2 of the strongest technology areas we can learn from Asia. If you are interested to see what’s up in Korea, this might be a good event to attend.

Management 2.0

Posted in Technology Ventures at 1:56 am by Ray Wu

It seems that IT management is and will continue to be a major fighting ground for IT investment. Even though VCs have been shunning away from IT infrastructure investment, open source and SaaS based management tools are jumping into this crowded space from everywhere. Here are just a few I know of:

Blog stats tracking

Posted in Technology Ventures at 11:14 pm by Ray Wu

I just started to put tracking in place for this blog. I found 2 services out: Google Analytics and Mybloglog.com

The funny thing is that even though I insert both tracking logic one after another on the same location in my blog template, I get totally different tracking numbers, sometimes they are magnitude off. I am not sure what the reason can be, but since Google has been doing this longer and provide more drill-down, I tend to trust that number more.

New Microsoft IE 7.0

Posted in Technology Ventures at 2:38 am by Ray Wu

I just started to play with the new Microsoft IE 7.0 and like what I see. I have been mainly using Firefox for its stability, speed and tabbed window functionality. With the new IE 7.0, MSFT has done a good job simplify the user interface. What I really like the ability to layout all the tab window in one screen [Quick Tabs]. RSS reader/feed interface is nice and make it very easy to subscribe and read. There are still bugs in the software. For example, the page sometimes stops in the middle of loading on some sites and I have to refresh to reload the page.
